Hi Hugh,
Who knows which are the best- as I said it probably depends on the type of foal you are hoping to breed stocky and traditional or sporty tall, lighter boned animals.
As i said I am very new to Connemara ponies, but when reading about the breed it seems to be quite a new breed with lots of different influences- and breeds mixed in- Arabs, irish Draughts, Welsh cobs hackneys and T/b.
When i hear people saying they are hardy, tough, and docile for children I am sure many of the older more traditonal types were, but now those with bloodlines geared more to performance with t/b and arab in their backbreeding are bound to be sharper, hotter and not so hardy or tough.
I suppose anyone looking for performance breeding lines will look for breeding stock decended from carna bobby or carna dun, or for stallions that are performing and producing jumping stock.
Westside Mirah is a classic example of a performance sire.
Silver Shadow is very popular at the moment also.
We all hope to breed something special that is an athlete, or a headturner at the shows- and then once in a while mother nature has a laugh at us and sends something special from nowhere a fluke !!!!!
